Rifles: Mid-Size Game Hunting

Bigger than most varmints, though still smaller than most species of deer, antelope, mountain goats and sheep present unique challenges compared to hunting deer and similar game. The ideal rifle for this type of game should reflect the animal’s size, habits, and habitat.

Antelope have very keen eyes able to spot danger from a distance and the ability to run up to sixty miles per hour, and thus tend to populate open habitats such as grasslands or deserts. Large caliber rifles often used for deer or larger game will work, but the heavier bullet may prove less effective. Recommended calibers for hunting antelope in open terrain range from a .25/06 to the .270, preferably using bullets weighing somewhere around 100 grains. These smaller cartridges are preferred as hunting these animals often requires long shots of 200-300 yards or more.   

Hunting mountain goats may also present opportunities for long shots, but goats can be tougher to stop. Dropping the target where it stands is more desirable as tracking these animals could lead to dangerous terrain. Add on the potential need to defend against predatory creatures, a larger caliber cartridge may be desired for this kind of hunt.

Overall, a flat trajectory round matched with a high powered scope will be necessary for success.
